              Year 1 - Woodpeckers

Term 1 - Wash Day

This term we had a visit from the Yate Heritage Centre. We learnt all about how people used to wash their clothes before washing machines were invented. We had lots of fun using the wash board, the dolly peg and the mangle.  Finally we hung out the clean clothes to dry.

Term 1 - Transient Art

We have been learning about the work of artist Andy Goldsworthy. We created our own art works using natural materials.

Term 2 - A Medieval Christmas

Jasmine from the Winterbourne Medieval Barn visited us and taught us about how people celebrated Christmas in Medieval times. We learnt about the kind of foods that people would eat and how they differ from the Christmas foods we enjoy today. We talked about Christmas decorations and worked together to create our own Christmas Wreaths. For entertainment people would greatly enjoy a Mummers play (a little similar to the pantomimes of today). We created our own character masks that we might wear if we were an actor in a play.

Term 3 - Printmaking

This term in art we have been printing. We began by exploring printing in paint using different objects. We then designed and made our own print blocks to create different patterns and effects.

Term 4 - World Book Day

On world Book Day we dressed up as book characters.

As part of our work this term we have been studying the book "Jim and the beanstalk". In the story Jim measures the Giant for a new pair of glasses. We designed, measured and created our own fun glasses to wear. We think you will agree they are fabulous!

Term 4 - Art Week

During art week we created some art-work based on our topic themes of “Jim and the Beanstalk” and growing plants. We did close observational pencil drawings of flowers and for our recycled art project we created a fabulous display using newspaper (with a little help from a very artistic mum - thank you).

Please take a look at all the amazing learning we have been doing!
